Hallelujah and Praise the Lord!

For years now, we have struggled to get the three youngest kids to stay in their beds throughout the night. Brinley is the worst. So when she stayed in her bed all night Thursday, Michele and I made a big deal out of it the next morning when she woke up. She came into the living room to cuddle with me and as we were sitting there, Tristan woke up and came to sit down next to us. When he heard what Brinley had done, without any preamble he said, “Hallelujah and Praise the Lord!” We thought that was hilarious!

My del.icio.us bookmarks for March 1st through March 11th

These are my links for March 1st through March 11th:

  • Install WordPress on a USB stick – I am a big fan of using USB flash drives for portable applications like Firefox, Flock, and now WordPress. MPOW locks down PCs to such an extent that this is sometimes the only way someone can use the tools they really want to use.
  • Twitter – A sort of "lite" version of blogging…I have to admit that right now I don’t understand it’s usefulness but I hope that will change soon. Found thanks to Steven Cohen of Library Stuff.
  • Color Schemer – Online Color Scheme Generator – Enables you to quickly check on a particular hex value (what color it represents), as well as see which colors are complementary.
  • Library Z39.50 destinations – A list of libraries whose catalogs support Z39.50 searching, along with information needed to connect to their catalogs via Z39.50
  • Exlibris – Pivotal eService – The support portal for Ex Libris customers.

SFX and convenience for users

One of the things I am responsible for is my library’s SFX service. I am a huge SFX fan and one of the reasons for my enthusiasm is that there are so many interesting things one can do with SFX. Today I stumbled across an example SFX services window customized for the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. Two aspects to their customizations that caught my attention are highlighted in yellow and green in the following screenshot: a message that directs non-authenticated users to a local link resolver via WorldCat Registry, and a link to generate a TinyURL for the services window. Pretty cool! These additions go that little bit further to create convenience for users.

Great article on LibraryThing

Great article (found via Steven Cohen’s Library Stuff blog) on LibraryThing. While some competitors have recently entered the same type of niche (such as Shelfari), noone does it better than Tim Spalding, Abby Blachly, and others at LibraryThing.

Foiled by technology

I consider myself a pretty techno-centric guy. I am a pretty fast learner when presented with new technologies but right now I am stumped. Yesterday a new combo DVD burner/player plus VHS recorder came via UPS and I was excited to get it set up and running. However, several hours later I still couldn’t get it to work and I gave up in frustration. It makes me feel pretty dumb to be foiled by technology :-)
