Tragedy at Taylor University

I am a bit numb from the news this morning, first from Ashley Peck’s blog and then via national news media, that several students and staff at Taylor University, where I worked up until August of last year, were killed or seriously injured in a car accident last night. (Ashley is a recent Taylor grad who worked for me in the library there.) The news has been reported at CNN.com, the Indianapolis Star, and the Chicago Tribune, as well as several other places. Taylor is a very close-knit community, especially for students, and this tragedy hits very hard. A huge celebratory event marking the inauguration of a new president, planned for months in advance, is scheduled for tomorrow, but there is some doubt now as to whether or not the event will take place. On top of that, the spring semester is nearly done. Some of the students who were killed were a few short weeks away from graduation. This situation is incredibly sad. The place where the accident occurred is in an area that we have driven through countless times and even though we no longer live there and don’t know all of the people involved personally, it hits very close to home. The family, friends, and coworkers of all of those involved in this tragedy are in great need of prayer and comfort. Please join me in praying for them.

Hitting a deer in our new van

We spent this weekend in Villa Grove with family. We were anxious to see how my sister-in-law, Linda, was doing, and also how my mother was doing. On our way there Friday night, a deer jumped out from the side of the road and hit our van. Fortunately none of us was hurt, although there’s quite a bit of damage to the front of the van. It shook us up. The poor deer was badly hurt but not killed instantly. The situation was complicated further by the fact that a storm spawning tornados was rapidly bearing down upon us on the small, country road we were on, and we had to wait about an hour for a policeman to come to give us an accident report and shoot the poor deer. After the policeman finallly came, we drove on to Villa Grove through very stormy weather, on the lookout for a tornado in the vicinity. We could only wait ’til flashes of lightning lit up the sky to see what was around us. It was pretty scary! We heard after we got to my brother’s house that a tornado had been sited about five miles from where we were. Today is Keegan’s first day of summer vacation and already, he is anxious to get outside and play, ride his bike, call friends, etc. I told him to chill out a bit ;-) I’m hoping to get the insurance matters worked out this a.m. relating to the car accident before I go into work.
