The course so far…

Last weekend I was glad to meet my students in the course I’m teaching for UIUC GSLIS in the summer session. They are a great group of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences. One person is originally from Argentina and was a professional chess player. Another is — I think — originally from South Africa and is choosing a new career after working in finance/accounting for many years. Someone else joins the class from Alaska; others from Colorado and Oregon. Another person happens to be someone who used to work for the same company I work for. Someone else in the class is a grad student in the Latin American and Caribbean library services unit at UIUC; the exact same position I held when I was in grad. school!

Aside from the panic I felt in needing to be in two places at nearly the same time (NASIG in Phoenix, AZ and Urbana-Champaign for the on campus class session), everything went smoothly. I’ll write a bit more about my NASIG experience in a separate post. Fantastic location and great conference.

I love teaching. These people are really smart, ask challenging questions, think broadly about the role of technical services within the library organization. It is heartening to hear them tell me that they feel a course like this should be required, not optional in the library school curriculum. I’m biased but I completely agree, because I believe that what we call technical services is the very backbone of library service.

Much needed vacation

I’m on Christmas vacation now. What a relief. I have really needed a true break from work for a long time. It was sad to say good-bye to Ashley, who had worked for me on web development and graphics things for the past two years. She graduated and is moving on to bigger and better things. One of the other students who works for me, Matt, is spending the next five days on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, lucky guy!!! Dave, the third student, will be spending time with his family in Wheaton. My brother, Dan, came to visit us for the first time this weekend and it was really nice to see him. We hadn’t seen him since my meningitis episode last year. He brought his dog, Cassie, with him, and she is a real sweetheart. We have a ton of things to do to get ready for Christmas but I’m feeling better already, having been off work for a few days.

Pirates of the Caribbean

I’m sure I’ll offend at least someone by this review, but if you have the stomach for it, read on, dear reader…This movie stinks, stinks, stinks. I fail to understand why it is so popular, except when I realize that probably the vast majority of viewers are silly teenage girls, the same demographic that made another extremely stinky movie, Titanic, so popular. I can just imagine them mooning over Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp. That leaves the teenage boys to moon over Keira Knightley, I guess. The screenplay is terrible–you have to suspend any attempt at making sense of it–and many of the attempts at humor are just stupid. Boy, do I ever dislike this one.
