Marketing to evangelicals

Though successful as fiction writers, Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins have not been able to convert their bookshelf success to box office profits, or as the WAPO reports in an article entitled ‘Tapping Congregations’ Power:’

Similar to this blog posting above, I really am bothered by this phenomenon of mainstream media now targeting evangelicals in its marketing of movies and other things. Of course this is the result of what media has seen happen with regard to Mel Gibson’s movie, The Passion of Christ, as well as the Lord of the Rings movies. The latest example I know of is the wooing of evangelicals for the upcoming release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (and I inwardly cringe that this is a Disney movie). High-powered studio execs arranged for an exclusive preview of the movie at our old home church, Wheaton Bible Church, a few weeks ago.

Keegan gone to Canada

Saturday morning, we drove up to Marshall, Michigan, to meet my in-laws on their way up to Canada. Keegan went with them for a week-long missions trip to Manitoulin Island. This is Keegan’s sixth year of making this trip. Our previous home church, Wheaton Bible Church, sponsors a short-term missions trip each year to an Indian reservation on Manitoulin Island. This year, my mother-in-law went also. They decided to travel in a bit more comfort than in previous years by renting a popup camper to stay in during the week. Keegan was so excited to go, he loves this special time with his grandparents. I am really proud of him and the work he does with kids his age while at the camp each year. We miss him but we are glad that he has the chance to be a part of this work.

He is the First and the Last

Today I read a passage of scripture in Revelation 1:17-18: When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. That is very comforting to me. So much of my life I have spent worried about something or other, anxious and depressed. Of course for me and for many people, the ultimate worry is death, but Jesus holds the keys to death and Hades. He will take care of you and me, no matter what happens. Elsewhere Jesus says, “…and noone shall take them out of my hand.” In a few days, Keegan leaves for his annual missions trip with his grandpa. He and my father-in-law will be spending a week on an Indian reservation on Manitoulin Island in Ontario. We will miss him while he is gone! Yesterday I met with the associate pastor of Upland Community Church, where Michele and I have recently decided to make our church home. We had a good talk and I was pleased to hear that he, too, used to attend Wheaton Bible Church, our previous home church.
